    Charity offering an information service to people with disabilities, and others seeking advice on computer technology. Activities include consultancy and assessment services to assist in choice and use of computer equipment at work and at home. The centre can also advise people who have repetitive strain injury who find keyboard and mouse work difficult. Local groups are set up in Bristol, Cambridge, Liverpool, London, Reading, York, Weybridge and Edinburgh. Opening hours Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm

  • Age Concern England
    Age Concern England is a national charity that works to promote the well being of older people and to help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. The head office provides support and advice to Age Concern organisations around the country. These organisations provide the direct services for older people locally and are independent charities in their own right. Age Concern England has a grant fund for new or expanding projects of direct benefit to older people which are run by charities or organisations with charitable intentions. Publishes fact sheets and an 'Information Bulletin' with information on community care, consumer affairs, disability issues, health and health service information, heating, housing, income, and parliament/government and legal affairs. All information is available via Age Concern's web site or the telephone help line.

  • British Healthcare Trades Association
    Represents 280 healthcare companies which supply products and services for people with specific physical needs. It represents companies in the areas which include: healthcare; furniture; mobility equipment; wheelchair distribution; occupational health; orthopaedics; prescription appliances; prosthetics; rehabilitation; stoma and continence care; surgical instruments. A code of conduct governs all members.

  • Can Be Done Ltd
    Tour operator and organiser of leisure 'days out' for disabled and less agile people. Aims to enable those who have disabilities, to have access to the same holiday and leisure facilities as those who are able-bodied, if at all practical. Co-ordinates accommodation, transport and visits to most areas of the world.

  • Disabled Drivers Motor Club Ltd
    Registered charity which aims to promote and protect the interests and welfare of disabled people, help and encourage them to achieve increased mobility. Information on all aspects of mobility available from the office, annual handbook or bi-monthly journal 'Disabled Motorist'. Benefits available to members include 15% off most RAC membership; 10% off parking at some BCP and APH airport car parks; manufacturers discount (additional to discount negotiated with dealer) off most Renault vehicles not bought through Motability; special insurance scheme; legal advice scheme; concessions on some ferry travel. Disabled people join as full members, non disabled people join as associate members, but may not qualify for benefits offered to full members. Annual subscription œ10pa (single), œ15pa (joint) Life membership; group membership (for organisations) œ50pa; Corporate membership œ50pa. Office hours: Mon-Fri 8.30am-5.30pm.

    Provides information and advice on driving, driving assessment, vehicle adaptations, car insurance and mobility problems for members and non-members. Have an adapted hotel, 'Ashwellthorpe Hall' in Norfolk, accessible to wheelchair users (DDA members receive a 10% discount). Ferry concessions available for driver members with lower limb disability. Magazine, 'Magic Carpet' published quarterly and selection of advice leaflets available. Local groups throughout UK meet to address local issues, for example, access, pedestrianisation and to provide social meeting points. Membership available singly or jointly if 2 members live at same address. œ10 for individuals and œ14 joint. second hand equipment may be advertised in magazine

  • Help the Aged
    This organisation campaigns and lobbies on behalf of older people, aiming to improve the quality of life of older people in the UK, and internationally. It operates Seniorline, a free national telephone advice and information service for senior citizens, their relatives, carers and friends, which is open Monday to Friday, 10am-4pm. They also run a winter warmth line (0800) 289404 and produce a range of free advice leaflets on health issues, housing, home safety and money matters. It can supply Seniorline telephone community alarms systems to older people on low incomes. Help the Aged runs residential homes, sheltered housing and operates a unique Gifted Housing scheme.

  • Holiday Care Service
    Organisation, which provides information and support to disabled people who wish to take a holiday. Service provides: information on sources of holiday funding for disabled people on a low income; information on accessible accommodation nationally and internationally; a range of publications related to holidays; information on accessible visitor attractions and transport; a reservation service for accommodation, including activity holidays and respite care holidays.

  • John Grooms Association for Disabled People
    John Grooms is a national Christian charity working with disabled people to maintain their independence and improve their quality of life through the provision of Care, Employment and Housing. Groom's Holidays is one of several operating divisions of John Grooms. It offers a wide range of accessible accommodation around England and Wales, including a fully accessible river boat on the Norfolk Broads.

  • Limbless Association
    To promote the general welfare and rehabilitation of people of all ages without limbs through amputation or otherwise. Provides advice and information to people born without limbs or who have had an amputation. Promotes Rehabilitation through a home / hospital visiting service. Membership and a quarterly newsletter.

  • Motability
    Charity helping disabled people and their families to become more mobile. People in receipt of Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS) can use their allowance to hire or buy a car, or buy a powered wheelchair.

  • National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux
    Provide free, impartial and confidential advice, through local bureaux, to anybody on any subject.

  • Radar Access Advisory Committee
    Aims to promote provision and maintenance of accessible environments, by removing physical, organisational, attitudinal and technological barriers within the built environment.

  • Spinal Injuries Association
    Aims to enable people with spinal injuries to control their lives and achieve their goals. To represent the interests of all spinal cord injured people, regardless of how the impairment occurred. To support all those affected by spinal cord injury, including the friends and family of the disabled person. Provides an up to date, accurate and comprehensive information service covering a wide range of issues to do with spinal cord injury. Telephone counselling service - (020) 8883 4296 offers both one-off and ongoing counselling to spinal cord injured people, their partners, families and friends. A link scheme enables some member volunteers to be contacted on a chosen topic, through a confidential registration form. Provides a list of solicitors, specialising in personal injury claims, who will provide an initial interview free of charge. A personal assistance service provides 24 hour, live-in help for spinal cord injured members in England & Wales for up to 20 days per year. Membership from œ12.50 to œ150. Produce a range of publications on spinal injury. Produce a bi-monthly newsletter 'Forward' where advertisements can be placed for second hand equipment.
